Photo Essay: Hagaon HaRav Chaim Kanievsky Checking Esrogim (Photos By JDN)

  1. I find these photos obscene. I adore Reb Chaim and all he stands for, and seeing him in a photo is not an unpleasant experience. But the flood of pictures of him and other Torah giants has exceeded any rational level, and approaches the worshiping of images, exactly what the Torah forbade in the posuk לא תעשה לך פסל וכל תמונה. If these photos were accompanied by information, such as the features one looks for in choosing an esrog, I would see redeeming value. Just pictures without Torah lessons is a serious diversion from what Hashem wants, and borders on being strictly prohibited. Many earlier Gedolei Torah, including the Steipler Gaon, Reb Chaim’s father ZT”L, were very against their pictures being taken.
