MK (Yesh Atid) Dr. Aliza Lavie questions who there are no women’s names among the candidates that are being considered for the next presidential race. President Shimon Peres’ term will end in July 2014 and the campaigning for his successor is underway. Some of the names already mentioned are former Knesset Speaker Reuven Rivlin, former Foreign Minister David Levy and Jewish Agency for Israel Chairman Natan Sharansky.
“It is unacceptable that in a Western country in which there have been nine presidents there has never been a woman. For a nation seeking equality, it appears we are still hung up in stereotypes” she adds.
Lavie, who chairs the Knesset Committee for the Advancement of Women plans to suggest a number of names of women who she feels are suitable for the post.
Former MK and consul general Colette Avital did compete against Shimon Peres and Reuven Rivlin in the last race but dropped out after the first vote. Some of the names heard is former Supreme Court President Dorit Beinish, Nobel Prize Laureate Ida Yonat and the president of the nation’s journalist council, retired justice Dalia Dorner.

The United States has had 44 Presidents, but no women have held the office.
The problem is that she doesn’t want the best candidate, she wants a woman dafka, even If she’s less qualified. She’s probably thinking of herself for the job
Strangely, this may be a way to have a President that wears Tallis & Tefilin – at least on Rosh Chodesh.
Nor dus felt os. Dorit Beinisch or Dalia Dorner as president of Israel. Would be even worse than Peres.
