Senetor Schumer Demands Airlines Reverse Flight Change Fees

54208285SC004_gasNew York Sen. Charles Schumer is urging airlines to reverse flight change fee increases.

The Democrat said Sunday that the additional charge makes it difficult for families on fixed budgets.

Four major airlines — Delta Air Lines, American Airlines, U.S. Airways and United Arilines — recently increased fees on ticket changes from $150 to $200.

He said most families plan their trips in advance and get non-refundable tickets to save money. But he said plans can change due to sick children or work demands.

He said “I am asking, really demanding” that the four airlines “put the brakes on these out-of-control changes of flight fees.”

  1. The effective solution is for customers to use other means of transportation. There are many airlines, and not all have the same outrageous fees. Over regulation, the Democratic way, tends to backfire. Consumers taking their business elsewhere, usually works.

  2. Maybe Schumer forgot but we deregualted the airlines over 20 years ago. They can charge whatever they want as long as the ticket prices and change fees are clearly disclosed at the time of purchase. Life isn’t fair and some people make more money than others. The airlines are supposed to maximize their profits, not be “fair” to lower income customers. If you want the ability to change your travel plans, than buy a refundable ticket like everyone else does. If you want CHEAP, than you take the risks that go along with CHEAP. If you buy an expensive ticket for a Broadway show or a playoff game, they don’t give refunds if you can’t make it or allow you to apply the price to another performance or game. Same for the airlines. If you want total flexibility at low cost, drive to the mountains for vacation and rent a bungalow or drive to your destination or buy travel insurance.
