Cuomo: Weiner NYC Mayoral Win Would Be A ‘shame’

weinerNew York Gov. Andrew Cuomo says it would be a “shame” if Anthony Weiner was elected mayor of New York City.

Speaking to editors at the Syracuse Post-Standard newspaper Thursday, the governor, who also leads the state Democratic Party, weighed in on a Weiner candidacy for the first time.

Weiner is back on the political scene two years after a series of inappropriate text messages ended his congressional career.

Asked how he’d react if Weiner won, Cuomo answered: “Shame on us.”

On Wednesday, he pointedly stayed away from the topic. Asked to comment on Weiner’s candidacy, he answered: “None. No reaction. None.”

A spokeswoman for the Weiner campaign didn’t immediately return a call and email seeking comment.

Weiner is among several Democrats trying to succeed Michael Bloomberg.

  1. shame on Cuomo, Weiner would be a good Mayor and also a very good Governor much better then we feel in with now

  2. Mrs. Anthony Weiner (my apologies – I forget her name) was an important aide to Hillary Clinton at the State Department. I believe that part of Governor Cuomo’s concern for a Weiner mayoral campaign – particularly a successful one – is that it would strengthen Clinton’s position in New York state if she decides to run for president in 2016. Mr. Cuomo may also be interested in running for US president, but as of today (which is a long way before 2016), Clinton looks like the current favorite. By opposing a Weiner candidacy on the very reasonable ground that the Weiner scandal disqualifies him from office, I think Mr. Cuomo is trying to push Ms. Clinton to back the spouse of her important aide and saddle Ms. Clinton with the embarrassment of supporting – or not opposing – a candidate who is … well, an embarrassment.

Additionally, there was a questionable compensation arrangement for Mrs. Weiner for a portion of the time when she was on the payroll of the State Department, in that she was also paid as a consultant to a Clinton-affiliated organization. That may prove to be an embarrassing arrangement in which Ms. Clinton acquiesced while she headed the State Department and could detract from her candidacy.
