nypdaThe NYPD is ramping up its security patrols following a spree of deadly weekend shootings.

Police Commissioner Ray Kelly is sending additional officers to public housing developments citywide, including Brooklyn, and is deploying more mobile and stationary watch towers near recent crime scenes.

More plainclothes officers will also be out on the streets, and cops from the warrants division will focus on making arrests in the neighborhoods that have seen multiple recent shootings.

According to police, there were 26 people shot, seven of which were fatal, during the 72 hours between last Friday and Sunday. Despite the weekend spike, they say homicides are still down 24 percent, and shootings are down 27 percent compared to this time last year.
