Poll: New Yorkers ‘Embarrassed’ By Weiner, Spitzer

wespPeople may be inclined to vote for Anthony Wiener and Eliot Spitzer, but they want to do it behind the curtain. Sixt Eight percent of New York state voters and 62 percent of New York City voters are embarrassed by the national attention to Weiner and Spitzer’s candidacies, according to a new Siena poll. Sixteen percent of voters statewide say the attention is “no big deal.” Just 8 percent find it entertaining.

Women were more likely than men — 72% to 63% — to call the Spitzer/Weiner spotlight embarrassing, and 75% of Republicans dubbed it disgraceful, compared to 66% of Democrats and 67% of independents. 74% of New York Catholics deemed Weiner/Spitzer fixation embarrassing, compared to 68% of Protestants and 61% of Jewish voters.

Mr. Weiner also hit a new low in his personal reuptation, the poll found. 80 percent of NY voters view him unfavorably, including three-quarters of Democrats and New York City voters. Only 11 percent have a favorable view of him.

“Weiner has set a new all-time Siena College Poll record with 80 percent of voters viewing him unfavorably — including three-quarters of Democrats and New York City voters — compared to only 11 percent who have a favorable view of America’s most infamous tweeter,” Siena College pollster Steven Greenberg said in a statement.

Mr. Spitzer, on the other hand, is not in tank compared to Mr. Weiner. The poll found that 59% of voters statewide have an unfavorable view of Spitzer. That includes 51% of New York Democrats and 52% of New York City voters.
