Mocking Obamacare Glitch, Republicans Selling ‘404 Error’ Bumper Stickers

The Republicans, damaged as a brand, are now mocking President Obama’s signature – Obamacare roll-out fiasco met with a computer glitch.

The Republican National Senatorial Committee is out with a new campaign, selling ‘404 error’ bumper stickers to motivate the base.

NRSC_BumperSticker_Error404_370_v1“Get Your 404 Error Bumper Sticker Today! Remind Democrats that Obamacare was a mistake with our 404 error bumper sticker – the same error message Americans are seeing each day when trying to logon to Healthcare.gov,” a message on the NRSC website says.

“Your contribution fuels our fight to build a Republican majority in the Senate in 2014, which is absolutely critical if we want to repeal and replace Obamacare. A five dollar donation will get you a healthcare.gov “Error 404″ bumper sticker with the number zero represented by a symbol similar to the logo used in Barack Obama’s election campaigns.”

The Obamacare website went offline for a period of time over the weekend, and a redesigned version of the site removed a photo of the young woman who had quite literally become the face of the website. Furthermore, Rep. Mike Rogers said on CNN’s “State of the Union” that the website may need to be rebuilt.

Frustrated Democrats lamented Wednesday that persistent problems with new health care exchanges have inflicted damage on the public’s perception of the already unpopular “Obamacare” — with some lawmakers insisting President Barack Obama should ensure those responsible lose their jobs.

  1. I am among the fortunate ones who have health insurance. I just received an “Explanation of Benefits” from my health insurer for a 24-hour visit to a local hospital which illustrates the disgrace that is the American health care system. The disgrace is not medical – my care was fine. But the disgrace is financial.

According to the EOB, the hospital billed my insurer for over $13,000 but accepted about $4,000 as payment in full for my care. Without my insurance coverage, I would be facing a lawsuit from the hospital for $13,000. People without health insurance face enormous claims from hospitals and other health care providers, when in fact these same providers accept far lower payments from preferred customers, i.e., the insured.

The purpose of the Affordable Care Act (which I am happy to call “Obamacare”) is, in part, to end this discrepancy. Halacha requires that we as a community assure that no one goes without necessary medical care. The precise details of the scope of this requirement is subject to extensive Talmudic debate, but I am puzzled by the absence of any such discussion on this web site.

As for the apparent Republican glee at the mistakes that have been made in the rollout of Obamacare, they have responded with a clever fundraising gimmick, but I am confident that 3 years from now, the Republicans will be a small minority party, and Obamacare will be recognized as a success. The real Error 404 in this situation is the failure of the Republican party to recognize the importance of healthcare to the public and the soundness of Obamacare. Yes, there has been a glitch in the roll-out, and there will be others, but we will get past that and, with some tweaks, the program will be successful.

  2. Financial disgrace; is the new obamacare. Before a person had a $1000 or $2000 deduction for the year under this system it raises to $5000, $6000 or more for a deductible. You would had to pay the $4000 out of pocket

  3. nfgo,

have you been outside the us and seen other countries healthcare, i assume not.

if anyone think government can run peoples healthcare efficiently, they deserve government healthcare

additionally, israel has government run healthcare however why do people come to the states to collect money for a person’s surgery/expensive medication?

  4. No. 3: In my brief trips outside the US, I have been blessed with good health and have no personal familiarity with non-US systems. There is lots of information indicating that in Europe and Israel, there is universal health care, no one goes without it, and it takes a much smaller bite out of their economies. As for the Israelis who come to the US collecting money for healthcare, you should ask them to account for the moneys they collect and how they spend that money.
