Feds To Examine NY Commuter Rail Line For 2 Months

tcrFor two months starting on Monday, federal rail experts will be judging safety compliance and culture at the New York commuter railroad that suffered a fatal derailment.

The Federal Railroad Administration said Thursday it is launching a comprehensive safety assessment of Metro-North.

Four people were killed two weeks ago in the Bronx derailment.

The railroad administration said its experts will be looking at a long list of Metro-North practices. They include engineer oversight, medical requirements for crew members and compliance with federal regulations.

An investigation has brought out that the train that derailed was speeding at 82 mph as it went into a 30 mph curve Dec. 1.

Representatives of the engineer say he may have momentarily lost focus.

Metro-North said Thursday it’s already taking its own look at safety.
