Major 2014 Yeshiva Budget Cut is Cancelled

ponA 227 million NIS cut in yeshiva funding that was scheduled for 2014 will not be implemented, the result of negotiations conducted by Bayit Yehudi with Finance Minister Yair Lapid. The cut in yeshiva funding in 2013 stands at 130 million NIS.

According to a report filed by Tzvi Zarchiya in the daily Haaretz, Bayit Yehuda has become painfully aware of the growing criticism against the party from the chareidi tzibur, so much so it felt compelled to act to prevent the cut in yeshiva funding in 2014.

  1. But if they plan to lock up all the 18-20 year old talmidim in military prisons, who gets the money? Or is this the carrot to be used for yeshivos that support conscription?

  2. Waiting for all the THANK YOUS and Hakaras Hatov notes to flood the Bayit Yehudi mail.

Will this be headlines in the Charedi papers? A majority of the BY MKs are supporters of Torah learning and have been saddened over the cuts & draft laws.

  3. In this crazy government, we don’t know what’s good news. We need new elections that will make sense. mark my words: if Israel survives in 20 years and the yeshiva movement is unhindered, there will be a frum government in place.

  4. TO not anonymous who says: ‘A majority of the BY MKs are supporters of Torah learning and have been saddened over the cuts & draft laws.”

If that is true, then Bayit Yehudi would end the alliance with Yesh Atid and the coalition would be turned into one based on Likud, Bayit Yehudi and the two hareidi parties (Yahadut ha-Torah and Shas). They could probably work out a compromise on conscription that results in the anti-zionists being left alone (and continuing to get no funding), and creating economic incentives for yeshiva students to join the IDF in a frum framework but not incarcerating those who don’t. BUT AT THIS POINT IN TIME it is Bayit Yehudi who is helping to lead the attack on yeshivos and the threat of mass incarceration of Bnei Yeshiva.

  5. #3 Don’t hold your breath. With some of these people, you’re damned if you do and damned if you don’t. Either way, they will attack.

There is a total lack of understanding that people can have differing opinions with legitimate motives.

  6. When reviewing the actions of the Habayit Hayeudi Party, it is important to keep in mind that its chairman, Naftali Bennett, is still teamed-up with the Hareidi-Hating chairman, Yair lapid of the Yesh Atid party.

Both Bennett and Lapid are multimillionaire yuppie types, who have an awful lot in common in their hashkofo on Olam hazeh versus Torah Lishmah.

In my opinion, Bennett doesn’t give a hoot about the plight of the yeshivos and the kollelim. All he cares about is retaining his political power.

The Amcha who vote Habayit hayehudi, however, are a different story. They are tradition-minded jews who respect Torah and tradition, and they are shocked and angered by lapid and bennett’s war on the Hareidi yeshivos and kollelim.

So, Bennett has to walk this fine line. He cannot simply go along with everything his pal lapid proposes, for fear of losing his support within his own party. Hence we get these furtive concessions to the Hareidim, here and there.

  7. #1- Can you PLEASE explain why you are so obsessed with this topic? You have no interest in EVER going to Israel and you don’t learn a WORD of Torah. I just don’t get it!

  8. I assume this is a Government Bargaining chip for their Draft plans. All this really is, is to play nice to the learning crowd, while they have a much bigger plan to cut the numbers of learners all together.

May Hashem continue to protect and support those who learn his Torah!

  9. I agree with #1.Politics is a predatory dirty profession.
Unfortunately Bayit Yehudit, has attached with Yesh Atid’s “one trick pony” party. They are now content with inflicting pain on the 800,000 secular and religious children and the Haredim(while giving themselves a payraise). When will Hashem hear the cries of the downtrodden and trampled?

  10. Yankey and Barry,

I am wondering why you keep posting these types of messages on a website with a non-zionisitc theme. Clearly, there are better sites to post, which are in-line with your hashkafa.

  11. #12- While it is true that the great majority of posters here are anti-Zionist, if you read ALL the posts you will see that there are quite a few of us B”H who don’t have that sort of hatred.

  12. It is sad that so many morons cannot see the Yad Hashem that made a State possible and prevented it from being destroyed numerous (that means many) times!
