Moetzas Gedolei Yisrael of Agudas Yisrael Focuses on Chinuch

moet

The admorim of the Agudas Yisrael Moetzas Gedolei Yisrael convened on Wednesday night the eve of 14 Shevat 5774 as expected. In attendance were the Rebbe of Gur, Belze, Vishnitz, Boyan, Sadigura, Moditz and Boston. The meeting was expected to address the imminent passing of a new chareidi draft law in Israel that will compel talmidim and avreichim to leave beis medrash to serve in the IDF or an approved national service program.

High on the agenda of the admorim was the fear of sate involvement in chinuch in the chareidi sector. The rebbes discussed what appears will be a program implemented in the 5775 school year that will demand additional teaching hours for girl’s high schools to include additional material. On the one hand, the teachers would earn significantly more money, which they can use. On the other hand, it will take the teachers, many mothers to large families, out of the home for additional hours weekly.

Some of the rebbes fear it will be interpreted as a new level of cooperation with the Ministry of Education, which they oppose.

  1. The article presents the tradeoff on the proposal for introducing “additional materials” (aka basic secular language, math and science courses) into the curriculum of Chareidi schools as longer hours for teachers versus higher pay. What about the fact that having such educational skills will give these girls a much higher likelihood of getting a good job or even advancing into college studies if that is their decision. Its not about the teachers, its about the students.
