Village Of KJ Opposes Locating Casino In Woodbury

casinoThe Kiryas Joel Village Board has gone on record opposed to establishment of a gaming casino in neighboring Woodbury.

The resolution dated Friday, April 4 cited existing “adverse traffic conditions” in the vicinity due to shopping and commercial facilities and their ongoing expansion and the impact it would have on what Woodbury officials and residents complain are inadequate water supplies and interference with their municipal wells, and inadequate sewage treatment capacity.

The resolution said the Village of Kiryas Joel is “a wonderful place to, work and raise a family, and we as the elected village board want to preserve and protect these qualities of life so that the future generations born and raised in the village may also enjoy them.”

Trustees also cited the state gaming commission’s requirement for license applicants to demonstrate local support for a casino. They also said no environmental impact study has been performed “to study the manifest adverse impacts” a casino would have.

The resolution also said the village should be considered an involved agency under the state environmental review process if the casino proposes to use the Orange County Sewer District No. 1 facilities.

  1. Why? I thought chasidim like to gamble. Whenever I’m in Atlantic City there always seems to be plenty of chasidim

  2. A casino would provide many entry level employment opportunities for young men and women from KJ who lack academic training and job skills. These include work accounting, administration, computers etc. Casinos are safe locations with lots of security.

  3. Gadolhadorah,
Why can’t you tolerate that Halacha says That Jews are not alowed to gamble? That’s not just KJ, and that has NOTHING to do rather one is an Accountant or not. One who wishes to be an Accountant can get their training in a different way. Time to follow the Halacha, not the heart desires.
