Brooklyn: Akselrod Campaign Harasses Jewish Community on Shabbos

baAfter a court appointed referee verified that Assemblyman Steven Cymbrowitz had significantly more than the required number of valid signatures to make the ballot for the Democratic Primary on Tuesday, September 9th, Ben Akselrod’s campaign issued dozens of subpoenas to Steven Cymbrowitz’s supporters on the evening of Friday, August 8th – hours before and during Shabbos in neighborhoods largely comprising observant Jews, Holocaust survivors and seniors.

“Ben Akselrod’s message is clear: support me or else,” said campaign spokesman Austin Finan. “Knowing full well that he has no record of work in the community, no name recognition, little cash in the bank and unable to win this case, Ben Akselrod has nevertheless filed a frivolous lawsuit in an attempt to use the courts to restrict ballot access and harass Jewish voters hours before Shabbos and on Shabbos, senior citizens and supporters of Assemblyman Steven Cymbrowitz.”

Assemblyman Cymbrowitz admonished Akselrod for his behavior and urged his opponent to issue a formal apology to the community.

“To threaten and intimidate the good people of this district is disgraceful enough, but for an observant Jew like Ben Akselrod to harass and worry other observant Jews on Shabbos shows how insensitive Ben is to the people of this district and his own community” said Cymbrowitz. “Ben Akselrod should be ashamed of himself. He owes our community an apology.”

Steven Cymbrowitz has served the neighborhoods of Brighton Beach, Manhattan Beach, Midwood, Sheepshead Bay and Gravesend for the last 14 years. In 2012, Cymbrowitz defeated Akselrod in the Democratic Primary for the 45th District of the New York State Assembly.

  1. This is an underhanded low attack by Cymbrowitz campaign on an upstanding frum candidate. I know Ben Akselrod personally and he is a fine frum member of our community. To address the facts, Akselrod has no control over when subpoenas are served, and the mere fact that Cymbrowitz says a lawsuit is frivolous does not render it such.

Cymbrowitz’ attack here is low, desperate, mudslinging. Let us stand behind one of our own and see the facts for what they are.

  2. “Ben Akselrod to harass and worry other observant Jews on Shabbos shows how insensitive Ben is to the people of this district and his own community” said Cymbrowitz.”

Am I reading correctly or is Cymbrowitz joking? “Insensitive” to the people of this district?
This is from a guy who went and spit on the torah and took a Shiksa for a wife?! Then he supported Gay Marriage?!
He is lecturing others about “sensitivity” towards the Frum community???

  3. First of all, I’m sure Steven has nothing to worry and like last time he will spend thousands of dollars and will be shaking until the election day, but will win the reelection. But, why YWN did write under the article Paid by Friends of Steven, when it’s obvious the article is a press release of Cymbrowitz’s office. Let’s not trick readers of YWN and report honest journalism. I understand he advertises with you, but still you should write clear either we are siding with his campaign or we don’t take sides, but I doubt you will do that.

  4. Cymbrowitz became Assemblyman on the coat tails of his late wife. His current wife is Vilma Huertas who worked for Cymbrowitz when he was a director at NYCHA. She is now the secretary of the board of NYCHA and is not Jewish.

    Read from her bio:

“Huertas always knew she wanted to go into law. After graduating from an all-girls Catholic school in New York, she attended Fordham University and then went on to get her J.D. from Queens College in 1989”

  5. Haven’t had a chance to see where you lifted this story from.

I wish the “holocaust survivor” tag would go away. It’s become so childish.

  6. Cymbrowitz should be ashamed of himself. Not only is he a liar, he also spreads lies on innocent Jews. I can’t believe that he is our assembly man. I ashamed to be one of his constituency.

  7. How can we say this about some one it is tantamount to slander
cymbrowitz is obviously attacking his completion because he is concerned Akselrod will win .
