NYC Mayor, Sharpton, Faith Leaders Meeting On Arrest Death

New York’s Catholic archbishop is bringing together the mayor and religious leaders for a roundtable meeting spawned by the death of a man placed in an apparent chokehold by a police officer.

Mayor Bill de Blasio asked Cardinal Timothy Dolan to host Wednesday’s meeting in the wake of Eric Garner’s death last month on Staten Island.

The mayor says he believes it can help a city gripped by protests and distrust of the police in some minority neighborhoods.

The meeting will include Catholic, Protestant, Jewish and Muslim leaders.

A spokeswoman for the Rev. Al Sharpton says he’ll attend. Sharpton has been a fiery critic of the NYPD in the wake of Garner’s death.

Staten Island’s District Attorney says he’s asking a special grand jury next month to consider criminal charges.
