Israel: Tishrei & its Accompanying Foods


pomsIsraeli will consume 800 tons of carp in Tishrei as opposed to 250 tons in a regular month. Amnon (tilapia) is also in demand, as in Tishrei 750 tons are consumed as opposed to 550 tons in regular months. The same holds true with other fish including buri (mullet); 250 tons instead of 170 tons.

The experts report Israelis will consume about a kilogram (2.2 lbs.) monthly and that number doubles in Tishrei.

Residents of Mediterranean nations consume 20-40kg fish annually, Japese residents consume 60kg annually per person and Americans 8kg per person annually.

Agriculture Ministry officials report in 2013, 75,000 tons of fish and fish products were consumed.

Pomegranates

Officials report that in the past three years pomegranate production in Israel has almost tripled. During Tishrei, Israelis will consume 10,000 tons of pomegranates, two-thirds of the annual consumption of 15,000 tons. The average Israeli will consume three pomegranates annually, two during Tishrei.

Honey

As we report on Rosh Hashanah we are compelled to provide some sweet honey statistics. Israelis will polish of 1,600 tons of honey during Tishrei amounting to 60 million shekels in sales. A survey taken among families celebrating the Tishrei yomim tovim shows the average person will consume 200 grams (7.05 ounces) of honey in Tishrei. Israelis will consume 4,000 tons of honey annually, about a half kilogram per person.

Apples

The average Israeli will consume 125 apples annually. Since Israeli eat an considerable amount of apples year round, the increase in Tishrei is not as significant as many might expect. In Tishrei consumption increases from 12-13kg monthly to 16-17kg.
