NY Assemblyman: Put Warnings On Sugary Drinks

soda.jpgA New York state assemblyman says sugary drinks should bear warning labels because of related health problems like obesity, heart disease and diabetes.

Brooklyn Democrat Karim Camara says Wednesday that he will be introducing legislation to require labels on regular sodas and other beverages containing added sugar. Under his proposal the size of the label would increase based on the size of the drink.

Lawmakers in California considered and then defeated a similar idea earlier this year. Critics of sugary drinks have also proposed taxes and size restrictions. A ban on supersize sugary drinks in New York City was struck down by the courts.

Camara says warning labels would help educate consumers about sugar’s health risks. He likened the proposed labels to the warning labels on cigarettes.
