How Did Deri Keep Yishai Supporters from Defecting?

deriOne of the questions being asked is how did Shas party leader Aryeh Deri prevent supporters of the Eli Yishai camp from following him to his new party. One of the successes being attributed to Deri is that while Yishai still enjoys significant support among faction members, when he broke from Shas to launch his own party, he did so on his own. No one else from the Shas faction in Knesset followed.

Channel 10 News reported on Monday evening 23 Kislev that Deri told faction members loyal to Yishai that if they remain he will lock their positions in and they will be serving in the next Knesset but following Yishai will leave their future vis-à-vis the 20th Knesset up in the air.

  1. When Deri came out of jail it was very clear that Rav Ovadia didn’t want him back in, and Deri black mailed Rav Ovadia by threatening to form a new party… Rav Ovadia wanted Yishai.

  2. “One of the questions being asked”

    By whom?

Is this a news piece or a PR statement? Their ship is sinking. Your previous article (3 down from here) on Deri, says he will only get 4 seats. Are you kidding me? Once they see that they will be out of a job, they will go running to the Yishai camp. What a mess.

  3. The article makes no sense since it is a gamble which side of the split will have the most seats. Keeping the 8th place on Shas won’t help if they only win 7 seats. At this point, no one can make predictions accurately since polling of both Sefardi and Hareidi votes has proven very unreliable in the past.

  4. Polls are never right when it comes to shas or charidim last election was the same they said shas will get 7 and they got 11 so you can’t know what will happen
