Some NYC Buses To Test ‘Talking’ Turn Warnings

nycbWhen some New York City public buses announce they’re planning to turn, they won’t just signal – they’ll speak.

The Daily News reported Wednesday that the Metropolitan Transportation Authority plans to test what’s called “talking bus” technology next fall.

Some buses will get exterior speakers to play messages to alert pedestrians when the bus is turning.

Transit agencies in Los Angeles, Baltimore, Cleveland and elsewhere also have been testing or using the technology.

New York City’s Transportation Department says 55 pedestrians and seven bicyclists have been killed in collisions with public and private buses since 2010. The MTA’s bus-collision rate dropped from 92 collisions per million miles traveled in 1988 to 50 per million miles last year.

Spokesman Adam Lisberg says the MTA aims to keep improving bus safety.
