Gafne: The Battle Against the IDF Draft is at the Voting Both, Not in the Streets

gafneMK Moshe Gafne addressed a Yahadut Hatorah election gathering on motzei Shabbos Parshas Terumah held in Bnei Brak. HaGaon Rav Mishkovsky delivered a message to participants from Maran HaGaon HaRav Aaron Yehuda Leib Shteinman Shlita, The election is about Kovod Shomayim and one who avoids this or influences others to do so, it would appear has a very large yetzer hora”.

The gathering was held in Beis Knesses Divrei Shir. Gafne used the forum to attack the Yerushalmi branch for the ongoing protests in the streets around Israel that followed the arrests of talmidim who did not report to induction centers. “We are in the midst of a struggle that does not compel us to take to the streets to make a Kiddush Hashem but simply to vote Gimmel”. It appears Gafne was responding to a column in the HaPeles newspaper affiliated with the Yerushalmi sector, which accused the chareidi Members of Knesset of failing to do their jobs correctly.

HaGaon Rav Mishkovsky addressed the forum too, explaining that despite the motzei Shabbos levaya the instructions were given to continue with the kenos.

HaGaon HaRav Bunim Schreiber added that one who breaks from the path of the tzibur forfeits Olam Haba, quoting the Steipler who explained one must vote to show one cares about Kovod Shomayim. Rav Schreiber explained that one who can vote but does not is in this category, of breaking from the path of the tzibur.

  1. That’s true only if the pro-zionist poltiical parties (that participate in elections) can prevail. And that is probably going to be the case since the only way Likud or Labor can form a government without giving up on other political principles is to include the hareidim, who will give a blank check in return for cancellation of conscription.

But if the pro-zionist hareidim fail, the the IDF starts mass roundups of yeshiva students, then the anti-zionist hareidim (Eidis hareidis, Satmar, etc.) will respond – and it won’t involve ballot boxes
