NYC Consumer Affairs Takes Aim At Predatory Used-Car Loans

alNew York City’s Department of Consumer Affairs wants to curb predatory lending practices that target used-car buyers.

A program announced Monday will eventually link consumers to financing options with reputable banks and credit unions in New York City.

The department is calling on them to submit auto loan proposals designed for low-income buyers.

Institutions that participate must agree to consumer-friendly terms and offer interest rates lower than New York’s usury rate of 16 percent.

Consumer Affairs Commissioner Julie Menin says many of the predatory loans affect buyers who are struggling financially and have families.

The department says the move is part of an aggressive initiative to protect consumers from less reputable used-car dealers’ sales and loan practices.
