BREAKING: NY State Senator John Flanagan Picked As New Senate GOP Leader

flanThe following is via Times Union:

State Sen. John Flanagan will be the new leader of the chamber’s 33-member Republican conference, succeeding his fellow Long Islander Dean Skelos exactly a week after his arrest alongside his son to face a federal corruption complaint.

The confirmation was Tweeted out by Sen. Phil Boyle, though the message was subsequently pulled, and reaffirmed by numerous journalists who said Flanagan won a narrow vote.

The chamber has to vote to replace Skelos as the Senate’s temporary president. Reports from Friday that Skelos was threatening to resign from the chamber, thus imperiling the Republicans’ narrow majority, appear not to have been borne out.

Flanagan competed for the job with John DeFrancisco of Syracuse, who before entering the conference room Monday morning told the media that he and Flanagan had met over pizza Sunday night, but had failed to dissuade each other from seeking the top job.

DeFrancisco also told reporters he had the votes to win the leadership as long as his commitments held true.

The chair of the Senate Education Committee, Flanagan is a lawyer in private practice and a former Assemblyman who was first elected to the Senate in 2002. His father served in the Assembly for 14 years.

  1. At least Flanagan voted AGAINST Gay “marriage” when the outgoing pervert, Dean Skelos, totally sold out and brought the vote to the floor of the Senate.
