Schumer: US Must Fight Bird Flu To Stop Rising Egg Prices

schumU.S. Sen. Charles Schumer says avian flu is to blame for the rising cost of eggs and that it’s imperative to fund government efforts to stop the spread of the illness.

The New York Democrat said Wednesday that the average price of eggs is up nearly 50 percent this year because of the flu, which has forced farmers to euthanize millions of chickens.

Schumer says the epidemic could prompt even higher prices for eggs. As a result, he told reporters that he’ll fight efforts to slash research funding to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, money that Schumer says is critical to developing vaccines, treatments and other steps to combat the disease.

Schumer says rising egg costs are putting pressure on consumers as well as restaurants, bakeries and other businesses.

  1. i’m not saying you can’t fight egg prices and the iran deal at the same time but what kind of person ignores the iran deal to deal with egg prices? is this guy for real?

  2. This guy is a disgrace, and he needs to be retired from active duty. We have a president who just signed away the safety of Israel and America to have a paper agreement and a legacy. And Schumer supports this? All he is worried about is the price of eggs when there is a world safety issue that has been pushed into partisan politics and the Obama ego. All he thinks of is eggs? I question Schumer’s intelligence, and I feel nothing but disdain for all those who voted this fool into public office. Sorry, but I’d rather pay more for eggs and be alive to eat them than to submit to the politics of the current administration and insure mass destruction for the free world. This man is an embarrassment to everyone.

  3. Wow, what an admirable representative for his constituents and Jews in general.

He understands that keeping prices down on eggs is far more important than attending the anti-Iran-treaty in Manhattan.

    Kol Hakavod. [end sarc]

  4. No we don’t! We have to fight Obama and his quest to rid the world of Israel by allowing Iran to acquire the bomb. But once again Chuck U Schumer talks about everything but what’s important to his fellow Jews.

  5. I am going to make a not-so-wild guess that commenters 1 – 8 are hoping that Senator Schumer shares their views on the Iran sanctions/nuclear deal and excoriates Sen. Schumer’s fellow Democrat, the US president. I would be curious to know how many of them voted for Sen. Schumer in the last election, though I suspect only half of them voted, and probably not for Chuck. (I do not recall who last ran against him.)

We all know that Sen. Schumer is in a politically difficult position on the issue of the Iran/P5+1 deal. Many of his constituents, particularly the Jewish ones, have bought the Netanyahu argument that the deal is bad for Israel, but many other constituents, including non-frum Jews, want him to support the deal. So it is natural for a politician in Chuck’s spot to seize upon an issue that everyone can support – better medical care for egg-laying hens.
