Gun Recovery In East River Offers Window Into NYPD Scuba Unit

nypd2The underwater recovery of a handgun investigators say was used to kill a New York City officer last week is providing a window into the elite police scuba unit.

Officials say Monday divers meticulously searched Manhattan’s Harlem River for five days before discovering the weapon Sunday.

Police say tests have since confirmed the black .40-caliber Glock pistol was used in the Oct. 20 killing of Officer Randolph Holder and another earlier shooting.

Thirty-year-old Tyrone Howard was arrested and charged with murder in Holder’s death. His attorney has said more needs to be known about the case.

There are 30 highly-trained scuba divers in the NYPD’s 160-person harbor unit.

Officials say divers in pairs covered 67,000-square-feet of riverbed in their search of the murky, dark water.
