Ambassador Daniel Shapiro Regrets Timing Of Comments Criticizing Israel

danU.S. Ambassador to Israel Daniel Shapiro told Army Radio on Monday that he regrets the timing of controversial remarks he made last week that were critical of Israeli policies in Judea and Samaria.

Shapiro had said at a conference in Tel Aviv on Jan. 18, “Too many attacks on Palestinians lack a vigorous investigation or response by Israeli authorities; too much vigilantism goes unchecked; and at times there seem to be two standards of adherence to the rule of law: one for Israelis and another for Palestinians.” Earlier on the same day, Israeli mother of six Dafna Meir was laid to rest in Jerusalem after being stabbed to death by a Palestinian terrorist in Otniel, while a pregnant Israeli woman, Michal Froman, was wounded in a stabbing in Tekoa.

In Monday’s Army Radio interview, Shapiro said, “I understand the timing [of the comments] was not the best. I started with a condemnation of the attacks in Otniel and Tekoa. There were just one or two lines that caused disagreement, but if this, God forbid, hurt the Meir family or anyone else mourning Dafna’s death, may her memory be a blessing, then of course I regret it.”

  1. “If this caused hurt” … “then I regret it”.

And if no one was hurt, then it was ok what he said? Only if it caused someone else pain? He obviously still stands behind what he said. He just thinks his timing was a little off.

    Typical leftist liberal.

  2. Apology not excepted! What a disingenuous Democrat phony! Shapiro couldn’t care less. He’s just a little twerp puppet to his master Hussein Obama.

  3. Another one of OB’s COURT JEWS.

He should make aliyah, live here as an Israeli citizen, then MAYBE he would be able to voice his opinion.

  4. It is not merely enough to regret the remarks. The remarks cause damage. He needs to clean up the mess. He can start to do that by praising Israel to the hilt, even after they do something that arouses his ire.

  5. The good news is that the two people who had just been stabbed at the time of his speech were both extremely tolerant of Arabs. The tekoa victim said herself from the hospital that she still thinks There can be peace and that she even thinks he didn’t want to do it. Dafna Levys husband invited the terrorists relative (an old friend of his) to the shiva. Dafnas husband also said that he thinks there can be peace.
