  1. I have know the feeling as a frequent Travler passing thru the above airports… But I think that the average frum Jew is not spending 12 dollars for a tuna sandwich!!
A good business model is to service a place, venue that has a need, such as the airports, but when you price yourself way above the norm your asking for trouble.
I have seen their stand in Newark but their prices are just out of Wack…
Hopefully they realize that and bring down their prices… Which will give them long term succes.

  2. Why pay outrageous prices for less than fresh “preserved’ sandwiches when you can bring them from home (and unlike drinks, one can bring them through security). Most frum Jews really can NOT afford to overpay for food. There are plenty of drinks with a hecksher (overpriced, as can be expected given airport policies).

It would be nice if there were a proper kosher restaurant offering fresh cooked food, which might overcome the natural frugality of frum travellers. It should be noted that all three New York airports are not far from real kosher restaurants for those needing to eat en route to the airport.

  3. Average for non-kosher sandwiches at these airports is about $10. If most of the kosher ones are $12, that’s not too much of a premium.

Of course #1 may be right that most of us are too smart to pay $12 (or even $10) for a sandwich unless we’re really desperate (or think we can get away with it on an expense account!)

There is always the brown-bag option…

  4. I’m glad about improvements that make things easier for the kosher traveler.

I wonder, however, whether shopping at a generally non-kosher food vendor like CIBO raises the issue of “mor’is ha’ayin”.

I think a distinction can be drawn between center-aisle stands or those set up like mini-marts (less of an issue) from those that resemble fast-food counters or restaurants (more of an issue).

  5. Before everyone runs out to take a mortgage to buy a sandwich, let me tell you that I was distinctly unimpressed by the quality of the complimentary Fresko meal I was served in the Virgin lounge at JFK a couple of months ago. But for the fact that I was really hungry, I would have put it aside after one mouthful. Nothing but nothing beats the quality of the Hermolis Kedassia certified kosher food, both sandwiches and on board meals [and no I’m not related!]

  6. blubluh ,

There isn’t any more maras eyin then walking into any other store that sells kosher & non kosher or items such as plain coffee which most reliable Kashrus agencies say if perfectly okay to do.

  7. If they drop the “paas yisroel” & “chalav yisroel” from the ingredients, will that bring the prices down? The super frumaaks aren’t buying or eating these sandwich’s anyway.

  8. cholov yisrael is for super-frummacks? really.. are you one of those guys every time he hears a halacha that he wasnt brought up with from his baalabos father he blames the frummies in lakewood for creating new chumrahs
