As YWN first published on Monday evening, HaRav Yehuda Kelemer Shlita, the Rov at the Young Israel of West Hempstead was struck by a hit-and-run vehicle in front of his Shul on Hempstead Avenue.

It happened Monday night around 7:30PM.

Rabbi Kelemer was on his way to the Young Israel of West Hempstead and crossing busy Hempstead Avenue when he was struck.

He was found by a passerby and rushed to the hospital where his is currently listed in stable condition, suffering from head and hip injuries.

Nassau County detectives say they’re looking for a white Dodge Ram pick-up truck, likely model year 2004 or 2005, with driver side front-end damage. Det. Lt. Richard Lebrun is asking area body shops to be on alert.

Police say there is no indication the rabbi was targeted. Detectives are looking at surveillance footage from cameras in front of the synagogue.

Police ask anyone with information on the case to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS.
