NYC Gas Prices Heading Towards $5 Gallon

Statewide gas prices are soaring to an average $4 per gallon — but city residents are already feeling the heartburn, with some prices rocketing in the direction of $5.

One station in Manhattan’s Meatpacking District is just 35 cents below the wallet-shocking $5-per-gallon threshold — meaning restaurants aren’t the only high-priced places in the trendy neighborhood.

“It’s absolutely too much. It really hurts,” said Chiqui Matthews, 32, a Brooklyn Heights resident who steered his gas-guzzling Range Rover into the Mobil station at 10th Avenue and West 14th Street, for a $90 tankful of the city’s priciest gas.

The station’s price is 57.5 cents more than the citywide average of $4.08 — and of course, it’s not the only above-average price around town.

The Mobil station on West 96th Street near West End Avenue on the Upper West Side charges $4.38 a gallon.

Since September, the price of a barrel of oil has risen 48 percent, and US gas prices have gone up 42 percent.

Most of the increases have come since mid-February, when Libyan rebels began fighting the Khadafy regime, shutting down the oil-rich country’s exports.

The average gas price in the five boroughs was 10.5 cents per gallon higher yesterday than a week ago, when the average price was $3.97. A month ago a gallon cost $3.82, and a year ago it cost around $3.

The national average for gas has increased for 25 straight days, and is now $3.82 per gallon, but the government expects pump prices to keep climbing this summer as vacationers take to the highways.

  1. If there would be a mass boycot of MOBIL gasoline for two months i can gurantee that the prices would come down drastically. Oil companies are making billions in profit quarterly so stop feeling bad for them.

  2. 1. Because you are stupid enough to take it, doesn’t mean we have to! Despite the best intentions of some of our socialist leaders we are NOT the UK or the EU!

How much of that is taxes? Keep paying taxes! What’s it getting you?
