Israel’s Cellular Reform Continues

Israel’s cellular reform continues moving ahead as promised following the introduction of the Golan and Hot Mobile companies a number of weeks ago.

The Knesset approved the elimination of an import tax for cellular telephones, which should bring prices down from 30-200 NIS a phone.

The market for cellular telephones in Israel is 5.5 billion NIS annually, 90% of which is controlled by the three major cellular providers, Orange, Cellcom and Pelephone.

The reform will give a boost to the growing number of stores selling cellular telephones privately, as an increasing number of Israelis are moving to one of the new companies, opting to say goodbye to the veteran service providers.
