PM Netanyahu Pulls A Fast One At Independence Day Torch-Lighting Ceremony

There was a considerable amount of back and forth prior to Independence Day surrounding Knesset Speaker Yuli Edelstein’s demand that he and he alone address the event, not Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu. Edelstein explained it has nothing to do with Mr. Netanyahu, as his opposition to him addressing the forum stemmed from the fact the event was under the jurisdiction of the Knesset, and not the Prime Minister’s Office, hence it was not personal but a matter or protocol.

It was finally agreed that Mr. Netanyahu would light a torch and express his greetings and nothing more, permitting Edelstein to remain the star of the show.

Reality tells a different story as Mr. Netanyahu spoke for about 14 minutes as Edelstein sat silently, left with no alternative other than appearing to be the statesman he wishes to portray.

For Minister of Culture & Sports Miri Regev, who is close to PM Netanyahu and supported him addressing the crowd, it was a victory against Edelstein, who threatened to boycott the event should the Prime Minister insist on delivering an address.
