Report: Minister Erdan Doesn’t Plan To Extend Police Chief Alshich’s Term

According to a Maariv Online report, Police Chief Roni Alshich’s tenure expires this coming December, and unlike many of his predecessors, he will not be given an extension, but he will be replaced by Public Security Minister Gilad Erdan.

The report states that eight months before the completion of his term, the decision has been made not to permit Alshich to continue as the chief of the department. The search for his replacement is expected to get underway in the coming weeks.

Alshich assumed the post as head of Israel Police in December 2015, and his term ends in December 2018. He was a deputy director of the Shin Bet but was persuaded to make the move to the police department by a number of people, including Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu.

It appears the outgoing chief and the minister have had their share of machlokes, so much so, Erdan wants him out at the soonest possible time. In statements made to the press by Erdan, he was extremely critical regarding constant leaks to the media surrounding high-level department investigations.
