Trial Begins For former Minister Gonen Segev, Who Stands Accused Of Spying For Iran

The trial for former cabinet minister Gonen Segev, who was also a member of the Security Cabinet, began in the Jerusalem District Court on Thursday morning, 22 Tammuz. Segev was charged last month with espionage on behalf of Iran.

State officials have determined that Segev began his connection with the Iranian Embassy in Nigeria in 2012. He also traveled to Iran and attended meetings with his handlers on two occasions. Other meetings were documented as well, in hotels around the world. He is charged with providing an enemy nation with information regarding security installations, government personnel and movement, the energy sector, and buildings around the country.

The indictment, part of which being sealed for security reasons, states his actions harmed state security. In fact, most of the indictment is sealed, hidden from the public due to the sensitive nature of the subject matter vis-à-vis state security.
