The Moetzas Gedolei Torah of Agudas Yisrael will be convening on Sunday, 5 Marcheshvan to discuss the draft bill, which has still not passed into law in Knesset. According to the Kikar Shabbos News report, the secretary of the council, Rav Yaakov Waltzer, will be returning home to Israel from Hungary. The upcoming meeting with be his first meeting run by him since assuming the new post.
The draft law is a burning issue for the Admorim Shlita, for if the current coalition government fails to pass an acceptable bill into law, the matter will be adjudicated by the High Court of Justice, and this is not likely to have an outcome in line with the position of the chareidi tzibur.
The Kikar report adds the admorim will also be addressing the upcoming municipal elections, with an emphasis on the machlokes in Elad between the chassidim and Degel Hatorah.
Agudas Yisrael’s Committee of Eight has already convened on the elections, but the admorim have not. It remains to be seen if the Torah Council will release an official endorsement of any candidates in the race. some of the admorim feel a letter must be released with the names of candidates running in each and every race.
The report cites that the Belzer Rebbe Shlita, who is resting in Telshe Stone, is expected to attend on Sunday. In addition, the Vishnitzer Rebbe Shlita will not attend due to a previous commitment in Arad, where he is resting. It is added, the Merkaz Vishnitz is furious over the appointment of R’ Waltzer as the council’s new secretary.
Sources in Agudas Yisrael explain that if Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu announces he is moving to early elections before the meeting, then in all likelihood, the Torah Council will not convene.
