PHOTOS: MK Glick Visits Har Habayis To Mark 4 Years Since Attempted Assassination Against Him

(PHOTOS IN EXTENDED ARTICLE)

Marking four years since the attempted assassination against him, MK (Likud) Yehuda Glick on Monday morning, 6 Marcheshvan, visited Har Habayis.

Glick also pointed out that 6 Marcheshvan is the day the Rambam visited Har Habayis.

Glick was shot at point-blank range by an Arab after speaking in Jerusalem’s Begin Heritage Center. He was gravely wounded and B’chasdei Hashem, despite a bleak outlook, he recovered.

YWN NOTES: Gedolei Yisrael over the generations and the Chief Rabbinate of Israel prohibit visiting Har Habayis, which they explain carries the punishment of karess.

  1. not every place in Har HaBayit is forbidden, the periphery is OK, but since most people are am ha’arztes, the chochomim tell people not to go up at all.

YWN should also note that MK Glick follows the Psak of his Rabbonim and only ascends to areas of the Har HaBayis that they allow, and only after proper preparation, including going to a Mikva and not wearing leather shoes. This is a knowledgeable Shomer Torah u’Mitzvos you’re writing about, not some yukkel who does things without thinking.

  3. Is the Luckshun Kugel rav hinting that the chachomim’s psak is flawed? That perhaps he knows better than they do? Are you aware that even HaRa’aya Kook z”l also forbade ascending the Har Habais?

  4. american_yerushalmi – There are other Rabbonim who are major Talmidei Chachamim who hold differently – and they are fully entitled to do so, the piskei halacha of Rav Kook ZT”L and others notwithstanding. MK Glick (and others) are perfectly entitled to follow their Rabbonim, who are Matir going on specific areas.

As to your mockery of luckshun kugel – he makes a valid point. I’ve personally spoken to a number of Rabbonim who publicly say that people should not ascend, and they’ve told me that me’ikar hadin, there are absolutely places that one is allowed to go – but they’re concerned that if they say this publicly, the hamon am will not look into the details of when and how, and will just hear “Mutar to ascend” – and will therefore be oveir on isurei kares. So please, keep the discussion respectful – no need for mockery (especially when you are not correct…).

  5. As they say in Yiddish, one who disobeys the Rabbanim is an “Umglick.”
Especially where the severe Isur Kares is involved!

  6. Firstly, I don’t know if he has semicha but he is commonly addressed as Rav Yehuda Glick.

Yes, the mainstream psak is not to go onto Har Babayis, and I don’t go up onto har habayis. But it should be said that there are respected rabbanim that allow and encourage aliyah lahar, and he is following his poskim.

  7. I just want to say, as nobody has said it up until this point- there are shittos both ways, and something about an umglick
