Chareidim Worried as 14,000 Students Have Relocated to Yerushalayim Ahead of Elections

There are concerns in chareidi parties pertaining to the upcoming municipal elections in Jerusalem, as some 14,000 students have moved to Jerusalem from around the country in order to increase the power of the pluralist lists and try to influence the type of person who will become the next mayor of the capital, MyNet reports.

According to journalist Rafi Perlstein, following a campaign aimed at encouraging Jerusalem’s students to vote in the upcoming elections, some 14,000 young people, who constitute about two seats, have moved to the capital and will influence the election of the mayor and the composition of the city council.

The campaign is initiated by the Center for Jerusalem Youth and in cooperation with many young organizations in the city, among them student organizations, youth movement organizations, activist groups, and more.

According to the MyNet survey, a record number of young people transferred their address to the capital as part of the campaign and their number will be about two seats.

In fact, there are about 14,000 persons who changed their address to Jerusalem. In addition, for a first time, municipal elections have been declared a national holiday, which is expected to lead to more people voting, a plus for the non-chareidi sector as the chareidim usually show a high turnout at the polls. Each approximately 7,000 additional people voting in Jerusalem will represent an additional mandate.

The campaign, which began a number of months ago, appears to have been quite successful, working against the chareidim.

  1. The premise of the article seems misleading. These students study in universities and colleges in Jerusalem. They live there for an average of 3-4 years. Transferring their address to where they live for years at a time is simply not being lazy and never getting around to it. Whereas according to the previous poster, if I am understanding him correctly, he’s just suggesting people in hose cities should lie. Gnaivas daas. Lovely.
