Report: Leon Promises Two Chareidi Chief Rabbis In Yerushalayim

According to a Yediot Achronot report, a deal has been reached between Degel Hatorah and Shas with Jerusalem mayoral candidate Moshe Leon, who promises the city will have two chareidi chief rabbis, an ashkenazi and sephardi as is the case today.

The rabbonim who will be appointed are HaGaon HaRav Moshe Chaim Lau Shlita and HaGaon HaRav David Yosef Shlita. This will obviously not take place until the current chief rabbis, HaGaon HaRav Aryeh Stern Shlita and HaGaon HaRav Shlomo Moshe Amar Shlita complete their terms, which for the former is about two years and the latter, Rav Amar, in about four years.

It has also been reported that the head of the Bayit Yehudi in Yerushalayim, Chagit Moshe, has negotiated with Leon, and one of her demands is the appointment of dati leumi chief rabbis in the city, which Leon reportedly rejected. Bayit Yehudi has not yet reached agreement with Leon, and there are reports that Moshe is close to signing a coalition agreement with Ofer Berkowitz.

The candidates, Leon and Berkowitz, are negotiating with the different potential coalition partners ahead of next week’s runoff election, which is scheduled for Tuesday, 5 Kislev.

  1. Before Silly comments Come
    say while
this may not be the shrewdest moves for the parties to be doing

Relative to the issues at stake for all of us
It is a small fry and no change of the status quo

  2. When Berkowitz talks about giving in to haredi extortion, you now understand what he means. Is this really the most important thing for the administration of the municipality? And #1 Toi, the hechsher supervised by the Rabbonim Hagaonim Stern and Amar Shlita is excellent. I”yH it will stay as good whoever the next two Chief Rabbis are.

  3. Jerusalem observer,
We hear loud and clear what your priorities are and what they are not
Judaism and the holy city ain’t part of them

  4. Liion will go in the direction of Abutbul in beit Shemesh: corrupt and giving preference to his buddies and giving money to those who support him.

Barkat was secular and even handed, Jerusalem benefited from him.
Lopiansky was religious and almost even handed (even though he took bribes and was convicted )

  5. A report on bhol last night that the Chareidim in Beit Shemesh are forming a united block with 14 out of 21 seats on the city council, i.e. with power to stop any coalition and to enter into joint negotiations so that the new mayor won’t be able to do anything without them and won’t be able to divide and conquer. Hopefully the Chareidim on the Jerusalem council will take a lesson

  6. luckshun,

If that is what’s most important to you then stay in New York LA or Haifa
any human could tell you that Jerusalem represents far more important issues to worry about
No Leon is not the whitest sheep in the pen
