Shas party officials are still concerned that party chairman, Minister Aryeh Deri, will be criminally indicted before Knesset elections on April 9, 2019 or once again, Likud will take votes from the party at the polls, a senior official in Agudas Yisrael states in response to reports that Shas may still join a united Agudas Yisrael and Degel Hatorah ticket in the race.
The Agudas Yisrael official is quoted in the daily Haaretz by Aharon Rabinowitz, saying: “Everyone is insecure regarding his position in these elections, but no one wishes to say it. Officials in Degel Hatorah want control, Agudas Yisrael limps along after the defeat in the municipal elections”.
Shas has cooled the atmosphere of chareidi journalists: “They have not yet come to us with a concrete offer. We have not reached the difficult questions, who will be at the top and how the division will be carried out. You have to go through a lot of oceans for it to happen.”
“There is serious talk, that’s true, but we’re really far from giving in. The gap between talk and action is still great,” a senior official in Agudas Yisrael told Haaretz.
A Shas person added in a conversation with Haaretz that: “Yanki Kanievsky (grandson of the Gadol Hador) is trying to leverage this and become the owner of chareidi society. As far as he is concerned, such a move is a tremendous success.”
