KIDDUSH HASHEM: Bat Yam Taxi Driver Returns NIS 60,000 in Cash to Non-Jewish Woman

Making a true Kiddush Hashem, a Bat Yam taxi driver, Moshe Barkat, known locally as ‘Barkat’, drove an elderly non-Jewish woman to Ichilov Hospital and later realized she forgot her bag – a bag containing a large sum of cash.

Barkat drove the elderly woman along with a young couple to Ichilov from Tel Aviv. About an hour later, he realized that the elderly woman forgot her bag, which he learned contained the equivalent of NIS 60,000 in foreign currency.

When speaking to the media, Barkat explains that he received the fare via a smartphone app, and being close by, he took the call. He added that after discovering the large sum of cash, he thought about donating the money to his sister who is making a chasenah for a couple with Down syndrome but realized the correct thing to do is to return the money.

“By the foreign passports in the bag, it was clear the woman is not Jewish, and despite this, I felt the mitzva of returning the lost property to a non-Jew as well and the money was returned to the woman” Barkat explained.
