HEARTBREAKING: Hatzalah Medics Couldn’t Tell Mother Sitting Shiva That Her Husband Was Niftar

Hundreds of people flocked to the levaya on Sunday night of R’ Yitzchok Meir Weiss, z’l, a Bnei Brak resident who suffered a heart attack and passed away while sitting shiva for his baby son who was niftar from crib death on Thursday.

R’ Weiss and his wife were married for three years before they finally were zocheh to their firstborn son, Yisrael, z’l. On Thursday, 5-month-old Yisrael was niftar and in a shockingly heartrending double tragedy, R’ Weiss collapsed at the shiva and was niftar three days after his son.

Shimon Weiss, the brother-in-law of Yitzchak Meir, z’l, was interviewed on Reshet B on Monday morning. “The tza’ar consumed him but we didn’t see it. He didn’t show any signs that would have pointed to the tragedy that was about to occur. He was strongest of everyone.”

Shimon said that on Sunday afternoon, Yitzchak Meir began to feel ill. “His wife saw on his face that something was wrong. He went up to his room. She followed him two minutes later and he collapsed right then.”

Weiss mentioned the prolonged resuscitation efforts the medical staff carried out at the scene. “The medical staff simply weren’t capable of informing the newly bereaved mother that she’s a widow.”

The reason for 31-year-old Yitzchak Meir’s death has not yet been clarified. Shimon said that his death was apparently caused by an aneurysm.

In a sadly ironic twist, the same Hatzalah volunteer was called for both incidents, Kikar Hashabat reported.

“Close to 2 p.m., Ichud Hatzalah received a call about an incident in Bnei Brak,” Effy Feldman, the head of the Ichud Hatzalah branch in Bnei Brak told Kikar Hashabat. “The volunteers arrived there quickly and encountered a man who didn’t feel well. The man began to speak with them and collapsed as he was speaking.”

“The tragedy is that the ambulance driver, the volunteer who spoke with the father before he collapsed is the same man who performed resuscitation on his baby last week.”

“The volunteers immediately began resuscitation, a paramedic joined them, then doctors-on-call and finally a mobile intensive care unit. After an hour and a half, it was decided to evacuate him to the hospital – while being treated – attached to a machine that performs automatic [heart] massages. Unfortunately, his death was pronounced in Tel Hashomer.”

  1. No words can describe the excruciating agony of this unique tazrah. As a mother that lost a grown child, I Cannot fathom how this mom and wife will continue on. But Hashem in His infinite kindness will rain upon her and the entire family His bounty and they will persevere.

    Hamokom yanacheim….,

Not to take away from the emotional side of this story at all, but if their only child was niftar first, and then R’ Yitzchak Meir, then that at makes this almana zakuk in yibum?

  3. The Shady Charedi: Yes.
If R Yitchok Meir has a living brother , the almanah has to get chalitza before she can remarry….sad…
