HaRav Zilberstein Responds: “Should Chasunos Be Pushed Off?”

HaGaon HaRav Yitzchak Zilberstein

HaGaon HaRav Zilberstein, who in recent days has been responding to numerous shailos in the shadow of the ongoing war in Israel, was asked about delaying chasunas.

Many chassanim and kallohs are nervous that there will be few guests at their weddings due to limits on gatherings and people’s fears of traveling from city to city at night.

HaRav Zilberstein responded that “chasunahs should definitely not be pushed off and should be held at the original dates they were scheduled for. The nisuin of a chassan and kallah is a very big mitzvah and this mitzvah should not be delayed.”

HaRav Zilberstein said that chasunahs should take place even if it means that there will be fewer guests present. The Rav added that there should be no reason to worry about traveling from city to city since those who go to be me’sameiyich a chassan and kallah are fulfilling a mitzvah, as well and especially the chassan and kallah themselves, who have the mitzvah of pirya v’rivyah.

HaRav Zilberstein concluded with an amusing line: “If you don’t have a minyan at the chasunah, I’ll come to complete it.”

  1. some other suggestions: 1) Move from the night to the daytime when traveling would be safer. 2) Discourage older people less able to get to a shelter from attending. 3) Do a minimal wedding and save the larger celebration for a time that Kenesset Yisroel does not find itself in an eis tzarah.
