US envoy Steve Witkoff is planning to meet soon with Hamas leader and the terror group’s chief negotiator, Khalil al-Hayya, the New York Times reported on Friday.
The exact timing of the meeting remains unclear, and two sources told the newspapers that the plan for the meeting could still change.
Requests for comment from Witkoff’s office, Hamas officials, and the White House went unanswered.
Witkoff and al-Hayya have met before: the two held talks in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, shortly before the ceasefire’s signing. Jared Kushner—President Trump’s son-in-law and a key mediator in the agreement—also participated in that meeting.
The meetings have drawn criticism in both Israel and the United States from those who argue that such engagement grants unwarranted legitimacy to a U.S-designated terrorist organization.
Adam Boehler, the U.S. envoy for hostage affairs, held several meetings with Hamas officials in Qatar last March.
