Iran has started establishing the world’s most expensive toll booth by charging transit fees on some commercial ships for safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz, media outlets reported this week.
Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps forces are verifying ship details and, in some cases, collecting the fees, Iran International reported.
They are demanding payment of as much as $2 million per voyage through what is now being dubbed the “Tehran Toll Booth.”
At least two ships have paid Iran to travel the route between Iran’s Qeshm and Larak islands, Lloyd’s List Intelligence reported on Monday, with one ship reported to have paid $2 million.
Bloomberg reported that the tolls are collected on an ad hoc basis, effectively establishing an informal toll on the strait. The method of payment is unclear.
