Lebanese politicians opposed to Hezbollah are expressing sharp criticism of President Donald Trump’s memorandum of understanding with Iran, warning that the agreement could strengthen the terror group and undermine efforts to weaken its grip on Lebanon.
According to a report by Israel’s Kan News, a senior politician from one of Lebanon’s anti-Hezbollah parties said there is deep disappointment with Trump over the decision to tie the Lebanese front to the broader understandings reached between Washington and Tehran.
The politician argued that the agreement bolsters Hezbollah while weakening Lebanese factions that have been pushing to curb the terror group’s influence and disarm it.
He also said the memorandum has embarrassed Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, both of whom have advocated for continued dialogue with Israel and efforts to reduce Hezbollah’s power.
The official expressed hope that the memorandum will prove to be only a temporary arrangement rather than a permanent agreement.
“If it becomes permanent, it will be a disaster,” the politician said, warning that such an outcome would allow Iran to continue expanding its influence in Lebanon.
