Israel: Smoke Screen Bombs Contained Phosphorus

The IDF released a statement confirming that some of the smoke screen bombs released during Operation Cast Lead contained phosphorus, stating ‘phosphorus bombs’ were not used against the population, but smoke bombs intended to provide cover for forces did contain an element of phosphorus to benefit from the chemical’s smoke-making properties.

The IDF spokesman stressed that Israel is stringent in its adherence to international standards, and international laws governing warfare.

The statement was released in response to allegations made by the International Red Cross and others that Israel used phosphorus bombs against a civilian population, a violation of international agreements.
