EU Pressuring Israel to Freeze Settlement Construction

The pressure on Jerusalem from the White House is not all that is occupying Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman. Pressure is also being exerted by European Union nations, seeking to compel Israel to halt all construction in “settlements”, communities in Yehuda and Shomron and to announce the administration’s support of the so-called two-state solution.

One of the measures likely to be taken against Israel is freezing the 15 June scheduled upgrading of Israel’s status. At that time, 27 foreign ministers will convene in Luxemburg, including Avigdor Lieberman.

The annual meeting addresses relations between the EU and neighboring countries, such as Israel. Israel’s was expecting to have her status upgraded, an important trade move, but now, this is questionable, with the EU following the American president’s lead. The upgrade is also important in the areas of education and travel, but the move may be placed on hold for now.
