Interior Minister Wants the Authority to Revoke Citizenship

Interior Minister (Shas) Eli Yishai has introduced a bill that would give authority to the minister to revoke the citizenship of a citizen without the involvement of the attorney general. Currently, the attorney general must approve such a move.

The bill is being introduced officially by MK (Shas) David Azoulai with the provision that revoking one’s citizenship will not leave a person without any citizenship. That means the bill takes into consideration a person who does not possess any other citizenship. The bill is intended to curtail the complex process that exists today, primarily intended to permit the minister to revoke the citizenship of those who betray the state, Israeli Arabs linked to terrorism.

Yishai has already announced that if the bill passes, he will revoke the citizenship of former MK Azmi Bishara, who during the Second Lebanon War passed information to Hizbullah.
