Yemenite Olim Visit With Maran R’ Ovadia Shlita

oy.jpgA group of recent immigrants from Yemen on Wednesday night traveled from Beersheva to Har Nof, Jerusalem, privileged to meet with the head of Sephardic Torah Jewry and Gadol HaDor, Rishon L’Tzion Maran HaRav HaGaon Rav Ovadia Yosef Shlita, who addressed the guests in an emotional visit.

The visitors, who live in a southern district absorption center, first visited the Kosel for tefillos, accompanied by Minister-without-Portfolio (Shas) Meshulum Nahari, also of Yemenite descent.

The Rav gave them a bracha, citing the significance of reaching Eretz Yisrael, explaining that despite his tefillos, Moshe Rabeinu did not merit entering the Holy Land. He explained the spiritual elevation associated with living in Eretz Yisrael, adding the wealthiest person in the United States has the physicality, but only achieves the spirituality when he comes to live in Israel.

The Rav spoke of the need to increase the performance and adheres of mitzvos and learning. Apparently, as the Rav was addressing his guests, Minister Nahari exhibited a smile, one that appears to have signalled the Rav in a less than accepting way, prompting the gadol hador turned to him and asked: “Why are you laughing? Go learn and become a talmid chacham”. The Rav then continued addressing his guests.

  1. there is a tendency for your Israel “reporter” to include all sorts of irrelevancies and disracting nuances to his reports such as the comment of Rav Ovadia to Minister Nahari… Why do you include these?

  2. Is the reporter being disrespectful to the Rav or was the reporter merely advising of the disrespect shown to the Rav by Minister Nahari? It appears Nahari needs to heed the Rav’s wise instruction. Perhaps the reporter could have simply said Nahari was rude to and drew a rebuke from the Rav, but he didn’t and there is no real harm to the Rav, so I won’t let the inexperience of the reporter control me by upsetting me.
