  1. Just a postscript.

A former Ponevizh Talmid told me that he was expelled by the board from the yeshiva because he was accused of tearing down the flag and Rav Schach ztz”l took him back.

  2. I also heard that when his talmidim tried to disrupt an anti-Zionist-flag protest in front of the yeshiva, he said, “If they won’t protest, I’ll have to hire protesters. I want people to know that it’s not lechatchila.”

  3. I am just wondering why the editor of YWN finds this, as earth shattering news & post this year after year. I guess YWN would like to stir up some controversy, & then of course Machlokes & Loshen Horah. I beleive it would be in the best intrest of YWN & it’s followers, to keep it’s site within a torah atmosphere &t refrain from posting items that are absloutly no news at all & all it does is, bring out the worst of us.

  4. The flag is an act of recognizing the hakoras hatov owed to the state. It does not constitute an endorsement of Zionist Ideology. Perhaps this point should be made clear. Chareidim are not Mizrachi and our views on Medinas Yisrael are diametricaly opposed.

  5. I think most anti-Zionist charedim realize that despite their differences with Zionist ideology, Medinat Yisrael is a far better place for Jews to live than, say, Gaza.

It should also be noted that there is a wide divergence of views among Religious Zionists: For instance, Rav Kook’s vision of Zionism was very different from that of Rav Soloveitchik.

  6. msseeker, for such an anti Torah state it’s pretty good that they even give monetary support to kollelim, bais yaakovs and somewhat to the chadarim. They might actually get zechusim for it.

  7. Fine, but don’t turn the obligatory flag into a holy inyan of hakaras hatov. It’s just effective fundraising, that’s all.

  8. Ponevitch flies the flag and burnes the flag ” a bissel modne nain”? Hakoras hatov and down with you ” a bissel modneh nain”? Is Ponevitch happy in Israel or would it like to be in Palestine UHHHHHH ? The Derech Hatorah is Hakoras hatov and no sinas chinum ,do iz haderech haemtzoi of Baaleh Daia. Not confusing shitos that are soser menay ubay. Rav Kehanemon ZTVKL told my father ZTVKL on yom Haatzmaut in 1980 “dos vill ich”( the flag) “mish nist arayn fun America”,Ain mol a yar a bissel Hakaras Hatov

  9. “The sun rose this morning. Why wasn’t it reported in the news?” See Emunah u’Bitachon from the Chazon Ish (who by the way was close to both Rav Kook and the Brisker Rav) Perek Aleph paragraphs 7 and 8.
