U.S. Household Incomes Flat Since 2019 Amid Rising Inequality

The Census Bureau reports that U.S. household incomes remain essentially flat compared to 2019, as high inflation erased most wage gains. Median income in 2024 was $83,730, nearly identical to pre-pandemic levels, highlighting why many Americans remain dissatisfied despite low unemployment. The top 10% of earners saw solid increases, while middle- and lower-income households saw little progress. Black households lost ground, women’s earnings stalled, and the gender pay gap widened for the second straight year.
