Escalated Protests Expected this Shabbos in Yerushalayim

71.jpgAccording to the buzz in Meah Shearim, this shabbos will bring with it protests that are expected to dwarf last week’s protests against the opening of the Carta parking lot by Jerusalem City Hall on Shabbos.

At 5:30pm, thousands of Meah Shearim area residents will make their way towards the Carta parking lot, planning to sit on the street and physically block traffic with their bodies, with Eida affiliates explaining thousands are willing to get arrested, adding the battle over kedushas shabbos will be won.

According to an Eida spokesman, pashkavilim with explicit instructions will appear before shabbos, but he already stated that small children, bochrim and females will not be involved, only avreichim and adults.

In essence, the Eida has decided to step-up their battle, willing to literally take the blows to continue their opposition to City Hall-sponsored chilul shabbos.

Earlier on Thursday afternoon, a violent protest was taking place in Jerusalem’s Bar Ilan area involving the burning of trash receptacles.

  1. I’d love to know what the “explicit instructions” will be. I hope YWN will publish them and that we will have a kidush Hash-m this week NOT another Chilul HaSh-m like last week!

  2. akuperma, is it not true that non-violent peaceful resistance has been practiced from India to Montgomery, Alabama?

Yehi ratzon that no Jew should do anything violent or suffer any violence whatsoever.

  3. The Eida could make a stronger statement: let the dayanim shlita get arrested and thrown in jail without kosher food deliveries. Writing a letter isn’t enough if you’re not prepared to deliver it.

  4. When I was learning in Eretz Yisroel, I had the z’chus to hear a witness descibe how Harav Amrom Blau, ZY”A used to sream “SHABBOS!!” – with tears! He didn’t go home afterwards & eat cholent. He went home & wept!! When he put his head through the bars of the movie theater ticket’s booth, so they couldn’t continue selling tickets on Shabbos – he did so with tears!

That’s how the fight for Shabbos was won. With mesirus nefesh & tears for Shabbos.

We, here in the US, must join our brothers in E”Y who are being moser nefesh for Shabbos. We should daven for their Hatzlocha!!

  5. Well locknload, seems like you don’t know these eida people, they ARE ready to get arrested and to be mekadesh shem shoomayim.

  6. If the Edah tells me to come, I will be there.

    Peacefully.

#2 – there is nothing wrong with civil disobedience, like blocking roads (NOT by putting burning garbage cans in the middle of the road).

  7. to all those who state chillul hashem, start being Dan Lechaf Zchus.

when i was a bachur and stayed for hsaboos at a relative house who is they key askan in yerushalayim he would not let me cross bar ilan on friday night as he had to many cases of bochurim being falsely arrested for throwing rocks at police.

I know someone currently in jail and yesterday they remanded him for another 2 weeks. there is many bochrim in jail for no reason other then being in the wrong area at the wrong time. mnay in the past were even dragged out of their buildings.

In the 1960 when there were hafhganas against the missionaries and Autopsies many Bachrim inclucing americans went to jail and the only way they got our after a month was with American pressure and the fact that the judge was warned that the NY times would print actual pictures of what they found in Haddasa in regards to the disgraceful manner of the autopsies

Please daven for these bachrim. They are very possibily being treated worse then the Jappanese are treating the 3 bochrim. A few people tried to visit my friend theother day in jail. The more chasidish looking were told no visitors. And the modern yeshiva looking were told they need to make appointments for visitation.

The world and I mean Me and you are doing nothing to help these bochrim….they are american innocent bochrim who did NOT throw rocks or such.

  8. #5 – non-violent protest is not the “minhag” in Eretz Yisrael – there the minhag is to shoot your neighbor before he shoots you. The issue is whether to allow civil disobedience (such as riots in which the maximum weapon is a dirty diaper),or merely to write letter and have silent peaceful protests.

By halacha, you probably need a Sanhedrin to have a violent protests (whether it be against the hilonim, the Arabs, the Brits, the Turks, etc.). One should note that Hareidim have never been overly anxious to play soldier (too many shailohs to even think about – can you kill an enemy soldier if you can survive without killing him, can you assist in killing enemy civilians, etc.).
The Eidas Hareidos’s “real” strategy is to defeat the hilonim by outlasting them – we sit and learn, work and mind our own business, daven, have lots of babies, and over time the hilonim will disappear and we will have triumphed peacefully. This strategy is very traditional and logical, but it requires much faith for a “modern” person to be patient and wait.

  9. “…many cases of bochurim being falsely arrested for throwing rocks at police”

My son was beaten up in Jerusalem by a group of Yassam Police Blackshirts on motorscooters.

He was standing on the side watching a protest, not participating. The Police are brutal thugs. They will beat anyone in the vivintity bloody, even if he/she is simply walking peacefully along the street.

The Government spin machine is expert at portraying Geolei Torah as backward, intolerant, reactionaries.

We need to understand that the Westernized secularists in Israel are determined to change their nation into a gentile extension of Europe. They hate the Torah Leaders with a passion, and they are determined to do whatever is necessary, by any means necessary.

Don’t allow yourself to be fooled by the secular media. To get the truth, call your friends in Israel, and read the Torah-oriented media, like Mishpacha magazine this week.

  10. savelkwd:

The rabbis requested people to be mekabel Shabbos on Friday night at one central gathering as a protest. They did NOT say continue with violence on Shabbos, and Motzei Shabbos. The bored hoodlums chose to use their “farbrente” passion for Shabbos, by burning property and acting like rampaging Cossaks.

Your friends saw what was happening, and CHOSE to be part of the “hock” and “reid” of destroying public and private property. He MUST LIVE WITH HIS CHOICE. The claim that the police randomly selected buildings to raid and arrest “innocent” sleeping people in their pajamas are flat out ludicrous.

  11. So could anyone explain to me how is it mutar to put yourself in a situation that leads to hilul shabbes when ones life is not in danger?
12# and what makes you think a corrupt government cant lead a majority?

  12. The Eidas Hareidos’s “real” strategy is to defeat the hilonim by outlasting them

HOW ABOUT CONCENTRATING ON THE “REAL AGENDA”?

  13. #14 – artchill

“The claim that the police randomly selected buildings to raid and arrest “innocent” sleeping people in their pajamas are flat out ludicrous.”

Where do you get the above information from, that the claims are flat out and ludicrous???

My son was one of those “innocent” bochurim that was “ludicrously” arrested for supposedly throwing stones at the police – whilst he was drawing cash out of a cash machine! From inside the police van, he saw with his own eyes the bochurim being dragged out of Kol Torah in their pyjamas!

What makes you so convinced that those claims are false??? Were you following the police around everywhere to know what they did/didn’t do??? The Israeli police are known as barbarians that have no passion for anyone. When they are told to arrest, that is what they will do EVEN IF THEY HAVE TO TRUMP UP THE CHARGES!

  14. I must be living on another planet-
Does any one really think “this is how shabbos is going to be won.”?

While it is true that I live in North America, and unfortunately I am used to my Jewish neighbors driving on Shabbos- sometimes I even see them wearing a yarmaulka in the car.

This is not the way to ‘win Shabbos’
This will turn off the non-frum even more.

Try treating them like equals, be nice to non- orthodox, invite them to your home for a meal-
show them how beautiful shabbos is
create a kiddush hashem- not a chilul hashem

  15. #15 – some would say you can’t, which creates a serious problem in a military situation where flight is an option

and the corrupt government leads very well – Israel has accomplished much (some good, some bad) — Israel is a world leader in many areas of technology, not to mention a world leader in selling weapons to people who perhaps shouldn’t have them, and much to everyone’s amazement, a leading in “Trafficing” women (and no, there doesn’t mean teaching them to drive).

The issue isn’t that the hilonim lead, it is where they are going, and who will follow. AND THAT IS WHAT THE STRUGGLE IS ABOUT.

  16. Whats this about being “moiser nefesh”??? I wonder if someone is allowed to make a terrible chilul Hashem while trying to stop chilul Shabbos, which HAS NEVER helped in the last 60 years!!

No one is STOPPING chilul Shabbos here! If anything you are telling people to be michalel Shabbos elsewhere. Not one person will EVER become frum a shomer Shabbos from these protests, if anything we will push people further from Yiddishkayt with this. So what did we gain? NOTHING If anything it will cause MORE chilul Shabbos and also a HUGE chilul Hashem.

  17. I still don’t understand why it is mutar to throw rocks and try to get horses to throw their riders. Perhaps if it was the rabbis and the roshai yeshivas at the forfront, I will think of this in terms other than some bored children looking for excitement.
My son said that one of the American bochrim in jail now was video taped breakng a cops arm. Innocent, un-justly abused bochrim. Right.
