Rav to Meet Representative of Ahmadinejad

Rabbi Yoel Schwartz, who stands at the head of the Beis Din for Mitzvos Bnei Noach, has been invited to meet with a representative of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Kikar reports.

The rav’s beis din was established close to a decade ago, and his rabbonim travel the world, meeting with people interested in adhering to the Mitzvos Bnei Noach.

The rav explains that a number of weeks ago, he was invited to meet with a Turkish sheikh, Ihiye Oron, a popular religious figure in that country, one who advises many members of parliament. The rav explains the meeting was conducted in a very warm atmosphere and his colleagues were greeted honorably, with the participants listening to rabbonim attentively. That sat for hours as the rabbonim explained the particulars of adhering to the Seven Mitzvos.

It appears the sheikh was not just being polite, but he took the matter most seriously and as a result, the rav is now invited to a meeting with a representative of the Iranian president. They believe such a meeting may lead to toning down Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s position. The rav explains he told the sheikh that most Israelis are traditional yet they do adhere to the basic mitzvos such as bris milah.

Rav Schwartz indicated he would be interested in such a meeting and today, Wednesday, he turned to HaGaon HaRav Yosef Sholom Elyashiv for a ruling on such a meeting. He explained that to date, he never left Eretz Yisrael, always sending shluchim but for such a meeting, he feels it would justify leaving Eretz Yisrael.

  1. One of the 7 Mitzvos Bnei Noach is not to kill. I predict that Rav Schwartz will get the same response as HaKodosh Boruch Hu got when He offered the Torah to Eisov and Yishmoel!

  2. With all due respect to the Rav, aren’t there any other important issues at hand to deal with? Ahmedinejad is a murderous lunatic. He even has his own citizens put to death if they disagree with his politics. Why would the Rav want to meet with the representative of someone who murders without hesitation? He is not going to change his ways.
