Kugel Attack in Meah Shearim on Shabbos

November 16, 2008

litzman.jpgWhile the title lends itself to some humor, the event is just one indicator just how sad the situation is following the municipal elections in Yerushalayim and the level of sinas chinam that is found in the frum community today.

Rav Yaakov Litzman on Shabbos came to a Slonim beis medresh in Meah Shearim for a simcha, but he was attacked in the shul by the many supporters of Meir Porush, who last week lost the mayoral race in the capital. Litzman’s hat was knocked off and he was targeted with pieces of kugel, punched and kicked, until fleeing the scene.

Last week, YWN reported the Knesset security officer ordered protection for Litzman in light of threats following the municipal elections.

Litzman, a MK with UTJ and a prominent figure in the Gerrer Chassidus, is credited/blamed in no small part for the campaign against Porush, which led to his defeat. The election has served to significantly widen the chasm between Gerre Chassidim and opposing factions, and this will undoubtedly lead to more friction as we approach the February 10th general elections.

Litzman did not require medical attention but did sustain soft tissue injuries.

The Slonim Rebbe on motzei Shabbos released a letter calling on all those involved in the incident against Litzman to refrain from attending any tischin until they ask mechila from Rav Litzman in person as a result of their unacceptable actions.

In the Gerrer community, reports indicate a letter has been circulated to ‘anash’ to refrain from any response whatsoever in the hope of lowering tensions and preventing an escalation in confrontations.

  1. Let’s not forget it was Litzman who fought the campaign for his party to remain in the coalition during Gush Katif expulsion. I don’t know if I would throw kugel at him..why waste good kugel?..but it’s hard to feel sorry for him.

  2. Yidden! This is not going to bring the Geula.
While I do not understand the Gerrer philosophy on backing a chiloni, there was good reason for them (and others) not to back Porush.
The outcome of the election though is Min Hashamayim and we have to accept it as Rotzon Hashem just as USA have to accept their fate.

Let us work on creating more achdus amongst us and not let filthy politics destroy a beautiful tzibbur!!!

  4. I haven’t been reading much of the coverage of the election here, and none of the comments because I figured there would be too much lashon hara, and not having a vote, nothing could be remotely relevant. With this I now know that I can’t even read the news.

  5. Mr. Litzman, has been working on an abusive campaign for years to oust Mr. Porush; for pure sinas chinam. Let’s focus the blame on where it should be. If not for this man, there would never have been machlokes in Beitar elections. Rav Porush only went on the other side of Rav ELiashiv because Mr. Litzman knew that if he puts himself on Rav ELiashiv’s side then Porush won’t be there so that way Rav ELiashiv will be upset at Porush… He’s the cause of all of this machlokes.

  6. Most of all!!!! Mr. Litzman was warned by slonimers ; knowing that he’s family with the people making the kiddush in shul, not to attend because he will not like what will happen. He knew very well, that many slonimer chassidim were helping Porush tremendously to be elected. But Mr. Litzman will always stay the way he is, and decided to go. THis is what you get when you are instigating machlokes….. IF NOT FOR THIS MANS ACTIONS THINGS WOULD’VE LOOKED A LOT DIFFERENT.

  8. I thought that charaidim are the true Torah observant Jews as opposed to the ‘tziyoinim’. Could it be that the charaidim do not hold from mitzvos bain adam le chavairo? At this pace they should support the medinah. True there is no bais hamikdash. But with their sinas chinam the Bais Hamikdash will never be built.

  12. I think these people are really admireres of Rav Litzman. That’s why they showered him with their best kugels.
Could you imgine if someone REALLY special would attend the Slonim shul; they would probably give him the cholent-kishke-kugel treatment all at once.
Didn’t we all know that these knesset members were the reipients of many “special- interest’ treats?

Nvei, I love that new term, the GLAT group fought to remain in the coaliton, Litzman was just one of the MK’s. The question is what is the next move for GLAT as Yerushayalim and Yehuda and Shomron (Beitar, Kiryat Sefer, Modiim, Ramot, Ramat Sholomo, Efrat)is on the cutting board??

  15. With so many charediem almost starving, how can we justify the waste of food that took place at that kiddush? Forget the politics, give the kufel to the hungry kinderlach instead.

  19. MiriamLU

You have no idea what you’re talking about.

A)Litzman was promised by the Gabboim that he can come without any problem which is why they came out with a tisch ban motzei shabbos.
B)There isn’t a single gerer chosid in Beitar. Litzman had ZERO to do with beitar. All you pilpulim on Litzman Porush are as ridiculous as kugel throwing.
